At a cost of $361 million per plane the YF-22 Raptor is the first generation of the most expensive fighter ever developed.

In theory the F-22 is the most effective air combat weapon now in service. In war games it has decimated large numbers of opposing F-15s and other high performance aircraft while not being harmed by return fire. In most cases the victims of the F-22 have been neutralized before they even saw their opponent.

The Raptor first flew in 1990. As of April 2005 the cost of developing the technology had reached $70 billion. The US government initially planned to buy 750 of the planes. But as costs exploded the size of the government order shrank which had the ironic effect of upping the per plane cost. The current plan is to buy 183 F-22s.

The replica of the YF-22 model is made out of solid mahogany. It is hand carved and finished with a high gloss varnish that gives it a mirror finish.
