 Spitfire
The Plane that saved England
Price Includes Standard Shipping to Street Addresses in the Lower 48 States

The Spitfire is famous as the airplane that saved England in World War II.

However its most interesting exploit involves the 1948 Egyptian-Israeli War in which English Spitfires downed other Spitfires flown by Egyptian pilots.

The British built Spitfire had a unique oval wing shape that made it easy to manufacture. Along with the Hurricane, it was England's main defense against the Germans as the Luftwaffe attempted to bomb the island into submission.

The twelve-cylinder-engine airplane had eight machine guns that fired small caliber bullets which allowed many German aircraft to keep flying even after the Spitfires had scored dozens of hits. But what the Spitfires lacked in punch was made up in their superior handling. The Spitfires were far more agile than the German fighter planes.

When the Spitfire was used against the Japanese the English were surprised to discover they could not match the low speed turning ability of the Zero. The Spitfire pilots found it necessary to resort to the same countermeasures against the Japanese that the Germans had used against them in Europe.

After World War II the Spitfire remained a popular aircraft that was manufactured for use by air forces around the world. When the 1948 War broke out England's Royal Air Force was attacked by Spitfires being flown by Egyptian pilots. In the first battle the English Spitfire pilots were surprised and confused and several Spitfires were destroyed on the ground .

In the second battle it was the British who were prepared and the entire Egyptian Spitfire squadron was destroyed.
