P-47 D Thunderbolt
Fighter Bomber
 Price includes free standard shipping.

This is an an excellent hand carved and finished model of the P-47 D Thunderbolt.

The plane was developed during WWII for the American US Army Air Corps which was in desperate need of a long range fighter that  could slug it out with the German, Italian and Japanese aircraft.  Beginning with the "A" model the designers added feature after feature until they came up with a rugged fighter-bomber that could accompany B-17 squadrons from London to Berlin and back.

Described as being like flying, "a giant bath tub" the plane at one time carried spare fuel in a belly tank made out of wax paper.  The tank had to be dropped so that the supercharged plane with a 2,000 horsepower engine could land.  By using paper for the auxillary fuel tanks the Americans were able to keep their enemies from recovering and reusing them.

Once bombs were added to the eight guns the P-47 carried, it was officially designated a fighter-bomber.  Allied pilots often strafted ground targets.  In addition to shooting down hundreds of Axis planes the P-47s destroyed thousands of railroad cars.

The model is made from mahogony.  It is finished with a clear lacquer that gives it a mirror finish.
