The F-4 Phantom fighter bomber was used by the Air Force, Navy and Marines in the Vietnam War.

Pilots flying the F-4 became the last American combat aces of the 20th century. Among them was Duke Cunningham who after winning an air duel had his F-4 hit by a SAM Missile. The plane lost its low speed manueverability and Cunningham had to fly it upside down until it reached the ocean where Cunningham and his co-pilot were able to bail out.

McDonnell Douglas built 5,195 before production ended in 1981. The average unit cost was $2.4 million.
