Designed to protect Navy carrier groups from long range attack the F-14 Tomcat brought down its first two enemy opponents in a dogfight with Libyan jets over the Mediterranean in 1981. To the public this was the plane best known for its role in the Tom Cruise movie, Top Gun.
The swing-wing, supersonic jet was retired from active service in September of 2006. It replaced the Phantom F-4 and has now been replaced by the F-18.
The Tomcat went into service in 1972. The only country still flying the F-14 is Iran. The US sold 80 of the jets to the Shah before his government was
toppled.
