F4U Corsair

Price Includes Standard Shipping to Street Addresses in Lower 48 States

Known as the, "the Bent Wing Bird," the F4U Corsair earned a reputation as a superior fighter-bomber that was used by Navy and Marine Corps pilots in World War II and the Korean War.

The wings had their unique upswept shape so that the designers could use an oversized propeller that maximized the output from the plane’s 2000 horsepower engine while minimizing the size of the landing gear to allow it to be fully retracted.

The Corsair was a notoriously difficult aircraft to fly and over half of he planes lost were the victims of accidents. But the Corsair was an effective combat weapon that was in such demand that ultimately the Chance Vaughn Company could not keep up and two other companies helped out by manufacturing the same design.

Some 12,571 of the Corsairs were built. The planes were hard to land on aircraft carriers and as a result the first ones were used by Marines flying from land bases. As the war went on the Navy pilots figured out how to work around visibility and other problems and squadrons of the planes were aboard the carriers that hammered Japan in the final days of the war.

The replica of the 4FU-Corsair offered here is hand made from mahogany and is finished with a bright lacquer that brings out the soft warm tones and grain of the wood. It is an excellent choice for decorating your den or desk. It is fully finished. It is not a kit. The wooden wings and propeller simply slide into place when you remove it from the box and place it on its stand. The Corsair is priced at $54.95. Insured shipping by DHL to any street address in the lower 48 states is included.
